A new gas field has been found in Companiganj Upazila of Noakhali. Officials concerned said the presence of gas was confirmed after drilling at the Sundalpur South-1 well in the upazila's Rampur Union.

The presence of gas was confirmed on Monday (2 November) afternoon after drilling at the well was completed. A DST test will be carried out to confirm the quantity of gas, it was stated.

It is initially estimated that the well may yield 7 million cubic feet of gas per day. This figure is still a preliminary estimate; the quantity will be confirmed only after the test.

Rakibul Hasan, drilling in-charge of the Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX), said that after a long period of drilling, the presence of gas was confirmed on Sunday afternoon by lighting a flame.

Rakibul Hasan also said the flame was extinguished because of excessively hot air. The Fire Service has been informed. The flame will be lit again in the presence of the Fire Service.
