Freedom Fighters Hold Human Chain and Protest March in Kishoreganj Over Obstruction at Manik Poshari's Burial
Freedom fighters held a human chain and protest in Kishoreganj against the obstruction of freedom fighter Manik Poshari's janaza and burial. The programme was held on Monday (2 November) around 12 noon at Shaheed Syed Nazrul Islam Square in the district town.
Freedom fighters from all 13 upazilas of the district and their family members took part in the human chain, organised under the banner of 'Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, Kishoreganj District Command'.
Speakers at the human chain strongly condemned the obstruction of Pirojpur freedom fighter Manik Poshari's janaza and burial. They also demanded a proper investigation into the incident and exemplary punishment for those involved.
The speakers said Manik Poshari was a valiant freedom fighter. It was deeply saddening that such a situation arose over the guard of honour, janaza and burial of a man who risked his life to fight for the country's independence. Such an incident can never be accepted in independent Bangladesh, they said, demanding that those involved be identified and brought to justice.
Speakers at the hour-long human chain included Kishoreganj District Muktijoddha Sangsad member secretary Md Habibur Rahman, freedom fighters Bosir Uddin Faruqi and Gias Uddin, Karimganj Muktijoddha Sangsad convener Abdul Mannan Dulal Shikder, Hossainpur convener Rafiqul Islam, Pakundia member secretary Delwar Hossain Majlu, Sadar upazila member secretary Nurul Haque, former district commander Md Asadullah, district Muktijoddha Santan Command president Sarwar Alam Masud, vice-president Sharif Mia and adviser Jamil Ansari, among others.
Speakers said valiant freedom fighter Manik Poshari had testified at the International Crimes Tribunal against former Jamaat-e-Islami leader Delawar Hossain Sayeedi in a crimes against humanity case from 1971. Sayeedi was sentenced to imprisonment until death in that case. He died on the night of 14 August 2023 while under treatment in prison custody.
The speakers alleged that, out of anger over his testimony against Sayeedi, local Jamaat leaders and activists obstructed freedom fighter Manik Poshari's janaza, guard of honour and burial.
After the human chain, a protest march was brought out with the participation of the freedom fighters. The march paraded through various streets of the town.
