Compressor explosion at a Rupganj garment factory burns four workers, one in critical condition

Staff Reporter

Four people suffered burns when a dryer compressor machine exploded at a garment factory in the Paragaon area of Rupganj upazila in Narayanganj. The incident took place on Monday night (November 2) at the factory of Sim Group. One of the injured is in critical condition.

The dryer compressor machine, located beside the factory's boiler section, suddenly exploded, according to reports. As fire spread after the explosion, people working nearby suffered burns. The injured are Ismail (30), Kamrul (55), Tapan (38) and Naimul (30).

All four have been admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where they are receiving treatment. Naimul has burns over 42 percent of his body and his condition is critical, according to sources involved in the treatment.

One of the injured, Naimul Hasan, works as a fire supervisor in the factory's mechanical department. He was rescued with serious burns and sent to Dhaka for burn treatment.

Mehdi Islam, senior assistant superintendent of police of Narayanganj district, confirmed that four people were injured. However, the police account and the factory authorities' account of the number of injured do not match.

Rezaul Karim, a retired major serving as an administrative officer of Sim Group, said one worker was burned in the incident and was admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. That statement does not match the figure of four given by the police.

On receiving news of the explosion, a unit of the Kanchan Fire Service went to the scene. The cause of the explosion and the extent of the damage were not immediately known.

Treatment of those burned in the explosion at the Paragaon factory in Rupganj is continuing. Detailed information about the actual number of injured, the cause of the explosion and the scale of the damage was not yet available.
