Polls are due to open across the United States on Tuesday for the midterm elections. Although President Donald Trump's name is not on the ballot, voters are weighing the effects of his agenda in this vote, which is widely seen as a major test for him.

Polls begin to close at 23:00 GMT on Tuesday, and the first results are expected after that. Final results, however, might take days.

Opinion polls put the Democrats well ahead of the Republican Party. Republicans are bracing for losses amid a backlash to the president's economic leadership and the Iran war.

Tuesday's biggest question is whether Republicans will hold on to control of the Senate or lose it to the Democrats.

On Monday, Trump delivered his final major speech before the vote. In that speech he spent more than 20 minutes discussing the pipes and joints of the Reflecting Pool — a detour that drew wide attention in the media.
