Voting Begins in US Midterm Elections, With Control of Congress at Stake

Staff Reporter

Voting in the United States midterm elections began on Tuesday. Millions of voters are casting ballots in this election, which will decide who controls Congress for the remaining two years of President Donald Trump's presidency.

After 4 pm Bangladesh time, a polling centre in the eastern state of Vermont was opened for voting; it was the first centre to open. At 6 am local time (5 pm Bangladesh time), voting began in several more states, including Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.

Voters are choosing all 435 seats of the House of Representatives, 35 of the Senate's 100 seats, and various state-level offices in this election. Governors are among the offices being contested.

Trump's Republican Party currently controls both chambers of Congress. The Democrats are seeking to win enough seats to gain a majority in both chambers.

If they take control of Congress, the Democrats would be in a favourable position to block Trump's various plans. At the same time, the party would also get the opportunity to launch investigations into the activities of the president and his administration officials.
