Verdict in the Rohingya genocide case against Myanmar due on 19 November at the International Court of Justice

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will deliver its verdict on 19 November in the case filed against Myanmar over allegations of genocide against the Rohingya. The ICJ announced the date on Tuesday.
The court said the judges will begin reading the verdict at 8am Greenwich Mean Time on 19 November.
The West African country The Gambia filed the case against Myanmar in 2019, accusing it of committing genocide against the Rohingya.
In the case, The Gambia alleged that the Myanmar military's 2017 operation against the Rohingya amounted to genocide. After that operation, at least 730,000 Rohingya were forced to flee for their lives and take shelter in neighbouring Bangladesh.
Rohingya refugees have described killings, widespread rape and the burning of homes during that operation. A United Nations fact-finding commission said 'genocidal acts' were committed in the operation.
Myanmar, however, has denied the genocide allegation. The country claims the operation was conducted lawfully against terrorists.
This will be the third verdict in the court's history in a case brought over allegations of genocide at the International Court of Justice.
The verdict could also influence other genocide cases before the ICJ in the future. Among them is the case filed by South Africa in 2023 alleging genocide in Gaza; Israel, however, has denied that allegation.
