President Donald Trump has said he will accept the outcome of the US midterm elections, as Republicans fell behind in the vote. He also expressed interest in working with the Democrats on the basis of compromise.

Trump made the remarks in an interview with The New York Times on Tuesday night (November 3). In the interview, the US president said he had no objection to accepting the election result and that he was keen to reach solutions through discussions with the Democrats.

Trump said, “I am certainly ready to accept the election result. We will work with the Democrats. I look forward to working with them. I hope we can reach some kind of solution.”

As the reason behind the Republicans’ poor showing, Trump pointed to his own name not being on the ballot. However, he said he had no regrets about his decision to endorse several candidates. Those candidates include South Carolina Republican Senator Darlene Graham and Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Trump gave the interview to The New York Times shortly before 10:30pm on Tuesday while watching the election results at the White House. During the interview, he expressed surprise on seeing the news of Darlene Graham’s defeat. Trump said, “I am watching the results as I speak. I saw Darlene has lost. Wow, that’s unbelievable!”

Referring to Senator Lindsey Graham, who died last July, Trump said he would probably have won had he contested the election. He also claimed that the Republicans would not have faced such a defeat had he himself been on the ballot.
