The Election Commission (EC) is taking a new initiative to prevent fraud in the National Identity Card (NID) correction process. If the new rule takes effect, applicants will have to apply for NID corrections using a mobile number registered in their own name.

Under the new system, there will be no scope to apply using a mobile number registered in someone else's name. Officials of the EC's NID wing gave this information on Thursday (November 5).

The officials said the Election Commission is in discussions with the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to introduce the system. An initiative has been taken to establish an Application Programming Interface (API) connection between the two organisations to verify the ownership of mobile numbers.

According to EC sources, at present a maximum of eight NID correction applications can be made using one mobile number. Once the new system is introduced, an application can be made with a number only for the NID correction of that number's owner.

EC officials said that under the new system, the identity of the applicant and the ownership of the mobile number will be verified.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission is considering whether a separate arrangement can be kept for expatriates under this rule.
