Onion prices have started falling at Hili market in Dinajpur. Over the space of two days, the price has dropped by 5 taka per kilogram, depending on the variety.

Onions that were selling at 45 taka a kilo are now available at 40 taka. And onions priced at 40 taka a kilo are selling at 35 taka.

Traders say prices have fallen because supply and imports of onions in the market have increased.

A visit to Hili market on Friday morning (6 November) showed that onions buyers had purchased at 45 taka a kilo last Wednesday were being bought today at 40 taka a kilo.

Nazmul Haque, a buyer at Hili market, said local onion prices had not risen much this time and remained within the reach of ordinary people. He had bought onions at 45 taka a kilo a few days ago, and today, with the price down, he was able to buy at 40 taka a kilo.

Day labourer Lutfor Rahman said that when the prices of daily essentials fall, it greatly benefits people who live by their labour. Vegetable prices have also come down somewhat, and with onion prices down too, running a household has become a little easier for people like him.

Mashiur Alam, an onion trader at Hili market, said the onion market is currently on a downward trend. Prices were comparatively higher even three days ago. He is now selling the 45-taka variety at 40 taka a kilo and the 40-taka variety at 35 taka a kilo, depending on type.

Mashiur Alam said he buys onions at wholesale prices from Natore and various districts in the south of the country and sells them at Hili market. With supply and imports up, prices have fallen, he said, adding that he hopes onion prices may fall further in the coming days.
