Son accused of hacking father to death in Narail's Lohagara after being refused drug money

A son has been accused of hacking his father to death with a sharp boti in Boyra village of Lakshmipasha union in Lohagara upazila of Narail after being refused money for drugs. The incident happened around 1pm on Thursday (5 November).
The deceased, Afsar Sheikh, was 60 and a resident of Boyra village. His son Khairul Sheikh, 25, has been on the run since the incident. Police took Khairul's mother Anwara Begum and wife Jui Khanom into custody for questioning over the incident.
According to family members and local residents, Khairul is addicted to drugs. He often behaved badly with his father and beat him for drug money, and when refused he would vandalise household furniture and commit theft. Fed up with his behaviour, his wife had at one stage moved to her father's home. The matter had also been taken up in a local arbitration.
Witnesses said Khairul returned home with his wife on Thursday morning while his father Afsar Sheikh was at a nearby market. When his father returned home, Khairul began hacking him indiscriminately with the sharp boti, killing Afsar Sheikh on the spot. Khairul fled after hearing other family members scream.
Rima Khanom, wife of the deceased's elder son, said that before her father-in-law returned, Khairul came home and asked her for the boti, saying he wanted to cut a green coconut. Hearing her father-in-law cough, she looked back and saw Khairul hacking him. Rima also said Khairul had been beating his father for drug money for about a year.
The accused Khairul has remained in hiding since the incident, so his statement could not be obtained.
On receiving the news, police recovered Afsar Sheikh's body from the scene and sent it to the morgue of Narail Sadar Hospital.
Lohagara police station officer-in-charge Shariful Islam said Afsar Sheikh was hacked to death with a boti and his body bore multiple hack marks. Police prepared an inquest report and sent the body to the district sadar hospital for autopsy; it has not yet been handed over to the family. Efforts are under way to arrest the accused son, he said.
