Rangpur madrasa teacher murder: prime accused among three arrested in Lakshmipur

Staff Reporter

Police and the SRB have arrested three people, including the prime accused, in the case over the hacking death of madrasa teacher Fakhrul Alam Ratan in Kaunia, Rangpur. The three were being brought from Lakshmipur district to Kaunia police station in Rangpur on Friday afternoon (November 6), police said.

The arrestees are the case's prime accused Mojnu Mia (32), son of Moslem Uddin of Shibu Kutipara in Kaunia upazila; second accused Lutfar Rahman (40), son of the late Abzal Hossain of the same area; and third accused Riju Mia (30), son of Meher Ali.

According to police and the case statement, on the afternoon of October 19, criminals hacked madrasa teacher Fakhrul Alam Ratan to death with sharp weapons beside his home at Haricharan Laskar village in Kaunia upazila.

The victim's wife, Shammi Akter, filed a murder case with the police station naming Mojnu as the prime accused, naming nine people in total and accusing four other unidentified people.

Kaunia police station's officer-in-charge (OC) Badal Kumar Mondal said Fakhrul was killed over previous enmity. After the killing, prime accused Mojnu and the others left the area and went into hiding in different districts.

Police and the SRB worked to trace the accused. After their location was identified with the help of technology, operational teams from SRB camps 13 and 11, together with police station personnel, raided a rented house in the Shakatla Bazar area under Ramganj police station in Lakshmipur on Thursday night (November 5) and arrested the three, including prime accused Mojnu.

The case's investigating officer, SI Nazrul Islam, said the three arrestees were being taken into custody and brought to the police station. Another FIR-named accused, Khalilur Rahman, had been arrested earlier; after remand, he is now in Rangpur jail.

He also said there had been attacks and counter-cases between the Nayan group and the Kohinur group over establishing dominance in the Shibu Kutipara area of the upazila. Multiple cases against people from both sides are pending with the police station and the court. Murder victim Fakhrul Alam Ratan was the elder brother of the Nayan group chief.
