India spinner Vaishnavi Sharma enters record books with four wickets in four balls

Staff Reporter

India's left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma has entered the record books with the rare feat of taking four wickets in four balls. She achieved the feat in India's Women's Senior T20 Trophy.

Playing for Madhya Pradesh against Andhra Pradesh, the 20-year-old Vaishnavi produced a magical spell. In all she took 6 wickets for 22 runs in 4 overs.

The record of taking four wickets in four consecutive balls in T20 cricket previously belonged to Humaira Kazi. She achieved the feat for Mumbai against Saurashtra in 2022. Vaishnavi is thus the second bowler to put her name to this record.

Vaishnavi took 2 wickets for 16 runs in her first three overs. She then returned to the attack in the 19th over of the innings and conceded 6 runs at the start. She then fought back, taking wickets in three consecutive balls to complete a hat-trick, and took another wicket with the last ball.

The 20-year-old spinner has been in consistently good form. Since making her international debut last December, she has taken 5 wickets in five T20 internationals for India, conceding 6.26 runs per over.

In India's ODI series against Zimbabwe last month she took 9 wickets in two matches.

Vaishnavi also holds the record as the first bowler in the history of the Women's Under-19 T20 World Cup to take a hat-trick. Against Malaysia in 2025 she took 5 wickets for just 5 runs in four overs and finished that tournament as the highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets.

She also holds the record for the best innings and match bowling figures by an Indian bowler. In the final of the 2024-25 Senior Women's Multi-Day Challenger Trophy she took 8 wickets for 50 runs in an innings and 14 wickets for 128 runs in the match.
