State Minister for Health Dr M A Muhith has called for a separate national institute for the treatment and research of hormone-related diseases in Bangladesh. He urged specialist doctors to begin planned advocacy on the issue and to prepare a specific proposal after discussion with the ministry.

He made the remarks on Friday, 6 November, while speaking as chief guest at the ninth International Endocrine Conference at a hotel in the capital. The Bangladesh Endocrine Society organised the conference.

The state minister said that although many specialised institutions have been set up in the country for the treatment of different diseases, no national institute has yet been established for an important field such as endocrinology. Yet a huge number of people suffer from various hormone-related complications, including diabetes and thyroid disorders.

He said extensive work on endocrinology is already under way at institutions such as BIRDEM, Bangladesh Medical University and Dhaka Medical College. However, a complete proposal needs to be prepared setting out the importance and rationale for a full institute in this field.

He said the government would take positive steps in the interest of general people's treatment and research.

Urging young doctors to give importance to research, the state minister said diseases such as diabetes, thyroid disorders and obesity are linked to many physiological and pathological aspects of the human body. Young doctors need to focus on research in these areas.

At the event, chaired by Bangladesh Endocrine Society president Dr Faria Afsana, chief patron Faruk Pathan, Dr Nasir Uddin Ahmed and research secretary Dr Nazma Akter also spoke.
