BNP Has Taken On Rehabilitating Awami League, Nahid Islam Says in Gaibandha
Gaibandha: The BNP has taken on the task of rehabilitating the Awami League, National Citizen Party (NCP) convener and opposition chief whip in parliament Nahid Islam has said, adding that the BNP has forgotten the Awami League's oppression of the late Begum Khaleda Zia.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists at an NCP regional coordination meeting held at the Gaibandha Zila Parishad auditorium at around 11am on Friday (November 6), attended by leaders and activists from Rangpur, Kurigram and Gaibandha.
Nahid Islam said the BNP is implementing various decisions by force. Ruling parties in the past also passed many laws, but those laws did not last, and power cannot be held for long by force in this way, he said.
He asked how the BNP could so easily forget the Awami League's 16 years of oppression, saying that Ziaur Rahman had paid the price of a historic mistake by bringing the Awami League back into politics, and that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman should not have to pay the price of the same mistake.
On the alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami, Nahid Islam said their alliance with Jamaat is agenda-based, not an ideological alliance.
On the upcoming union parishad elections, he said the NCP will field candidates on its own across the country.
NCP central committee senior joint member secretary Sarjis Alam, joint convener Dr Atik Mujahid and organising secretary Kamrul Islam Dorpon, along with local leaders, were present at the meeting. Earlier, local leaders and activists welcomed the central leaders with flowers when they arrived in Gaibandha.
