Police in Chattogram have arrested three men on charges of involvement in mugging and other crimes during a special operation in the city's Sadarghat area. Officers recovered a kirich, a ramda, an iron hook and four mobile phones from them.

The arrests were made around 5:40 pm on Thursday (November 5) in the Railway Station Colony area on Ice Factory Road under Sadarghat police station. Police said the men were picked up from a room in a rented house belonging to landlord Nurul Huda, opposite Collegiate School.

The arrested men are Shah Alam (25), Tushar Hasan (22) and Tajul Islam (36). Police said the weapons and mobile phones were recovered after the arrests, based on information given by the men and from items in their possession.

Among them, Shah Alam faces 13 cases in different police stations. Police said an arrest warrant was also pending against him. A check of the police crime database confirmed the 13 cases against him.

In a press release, police said several cases have been filed against Shah Alam at Sadarghat police station under the Arms Act, for preparation for robbery, and under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, among other charges. Cases against him have also been filed at Kotwali police station and Chattogram Railway police station.

According to police, of the 13 cases against Shah Alam, three are under the Arms Act and four relate to preparation for robbery and preparation for gang robbery. Other cases have been filed on different charges. He has also been named an accused in a robbery case filed at Sadarghat police station on Thursday, the latest of the cases.

Mohammad Ekram Ullah, officer-in-charge of Sadarghat police station, said initial information suggests the arrested men had long been involved in mugging and other crimes. Police are investigating whether anyone else was involved with them.

The officer-in-charge added that police surveillance and special operations to control crime in different parts of the city will continue. A case has been filed at Sadarghat police station under Section 394 of the Penal Code in connection with the incident.
