The SRB has arrested Md Jasim, 50, a fugitive sentenced to death in the Jahangir murder case in the Sonadanga police station area of Khulna, after 17 years.

SRB-6 and SRB-7 arrested him in a raid on Thursday night in the Salimpur area under Sitakunda police station in Chattogram.

The information was given in a press release from SRB Khulna on Friday morning, 6 November.

The arrested Jasim is the son of Hossain Ali of the Haji Tamizuddin Road by-lane area under Sonadanga police station in Khulna city. In the murder case, the court sentenced him to death and also fined him 50,000 taka.

According to the SRB press release, in 2009 Jasim lived as a tenant in the house of the victim, Jahangir Hossain, and was a rickshaw driver by profession. Jasim took 800 taka from Jahangir, saying he would recover a lost mobile phone belonging to a shopkeeper near the house.

When neither the phone nor the money was returned, a local arbitration meeting was held on the morning of 19 May that year. At the arbitration, Jasim's theft was found proven, he was ordered to return the phone and the money, and Jahangir ordered him to vacate the house.

Angered by that arbitration, Jasim that same afternoon stabbed Jahangir on the left side of the neck with a sharp knife and fled. Local people rescued Jahangir and took him to Khulna Medical College Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.

After the incident, the victim's elder brother Alamgir Hossain filed a murder case as the plaintiff at Sonadanga police station. Jasim had been on the run since being sentenced in that case.
