Two Killed, Including a Teacher, as Study-Tour Bus Plunges into Pond on Way to Cox's Bazar

Staff Reporter

Two people, including a teacher, were killed and at least eight students and passengers injured after a bus carrying them on an educational tour lost control and plunged into a deep pond in Satkania, Chattogram.

The accident happened around 4am on Saturday (7 November) near the Keranihat rail crossing in Satkania upazila, on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway.

The dead were identified as Sohana Afroz (45), a teacher at Bakshimul Sunniya Islamia Senior Madrasa in Burichang, Cumilla, and Md. Israfil (56).

According to local residents and passengers on the bus, two buses carrying more than 50 people — teachers, students and guardians of the Bakshimul Sunniya Islamia Senior Madrasa — had set out from Burichang in Cumilla for Cox’s Bazar on the study tour.

While passing through the Keranihat area of Satkania, one of the buses lost control and fell into a deep pond beside the road.

After the accident, local residents and workers from a nearby brick kiln rushed to the rescue. They pulled the passengers out of the water and sent them to different hospitals for treatment.

Members of the Dohazari Highway Police also joined the rescue operation after receiving the news.

The injured were admitted to the local hospital at Keranihat and to various hospitals in Chattogram city.

Among the seriously injured, Sohana Afroz and Israfil later died.
