Nicolas Cage walks back 'homeless' remark: what he said after the sinkhole at his Malibu home

Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage has walked back claims he was "a little bit homeless" months after a sinkhole engulfed his $10.5 million Malibu mansion.
The 62-year-old actor said at Comic Con over the weekend that he was living in hotels because of the problems at his Malibu home and could not welcome trick-or-treaters in the usual way on Halloween night.
Cage said: "I'm currently a little bit homeless. Something happened to my house in Malibu so I'm just sort of living in hotels." He said his Halloween plans had become a little tricky.
He said he would take his four-year-old daughter, August, trick-or-treating in nearby Santa Monica and then watch Stanley Kubrick's classic film "The Shining".
The driveway in front of Cage's Malibu home collapsed on Tuesday, creating a massive sinkhole. His beachfront home was damaged due to coastal erosion spurred by September's Hurricane Marie, which formed in the Pacific Ocean and generated massive waves in addition to high tides.
Evacuations were issued for more than 30 homes on the private road near the west end of the affluent community. The city explained that the properties were unsafe due to "the loss of access for Fire and Sheriff's personnel to respond to medical, fire or law enforcement emergencies."
Cage clarified with the Associated Press on Wednesday that his words were taken out of context. He said: "I went to Comic Con and I was riffing with a very good interviewer and he just had to ask, because it was Halloween night, 'What are you doing for Halloween?'"
He added: "Now, when I said that, I meant my house is not available for trick or treaters."
He said: "Now, I have to watch my words so much to the letter. We're content. We're fine. We're not destitute. We're okay."
Cage added: "I was just meaning that the house is not available for decorations and for candy to hand out to the children, which I like to do because I like Halloween."
According to Realtor.com, the "Con Air", "Face/Off" and "National Treasure" star purchased the 4,000-square-foot home in 2024 for $10.5 million.
Cage married Riko Shibata in February 2021, and the couple welcomed a baby girl in September 2022.
