Manchester United earn dramatic 4-4 draw with Aston Villa at Old Trafford but stay in relegation zone

Staff Reporter

Manchester United came from two goals down early on to earn a 4-4 draw against Aston Villa at Old Trafford with two late goals. But despite the draw, the 13-time Premier League champions remain in the relegation zone.

On Sunday in Manchester, the hosts conceded two goals within the first four minutes of the match. Alysson scored in the first minute, his shot squirming under goalkeeper Senne Lammens. Three minutes later Nicolas Jackson added the second, after a weak save from Lammens pushed the ball into his path.

Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 16th minute. United won the penalty after Boubacar Kamara fouled Matheus Cunha. Former Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans made it 2-2 in the 44th minute.

Villa went ahead again early in the second half. John McGinn converted a 48th-minute penalty after Diogo Dalot fouled Alysson. Leon Goretzka poked in Villa's fourth goal from close range in the 53rd minute, after United's Leny Yoro headed against his own crossbar.

But United saved the match with two goals in added time. Joshua Zirkzee's stoppage-time finish gave them hope in the six minutes of additional time, and Patrick Dorgu headed the dramatic equaliser in the final seconds after a weak punch from Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki.

The draw leaves United in 18th place in the league table with eight points from 10 matches. They have only three wins in 15 games this season.

The draw brought some relief for manager Michael Carrick. He was facing a fifth defeat, which would have raised further questions about his job going into the international break. Last weekend, after the loss at Chelsea, the club's hierarchy had decided to keep him in charge.

On Tuesday, United had ended a nine-match winless run in all competitions by beating Roma 3-2 in the Champions League, coming from two goals down. But on Sunday they were two goals down again within minutes.

Carrick wore a bewildered look as he walked down the tunnel after the match. United's next match is against Liverpool on 22 November.

On the same day, Chelsea suffered a disappointing defeat. They had arrived at the Stadium of Light hoping to strengthen their bid for a top-four finish and Champions League qualification. Instead they left beaten by third-bottom Sunderland. It was their fourth defeat in 10 league matches under former Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso, and they sit fifth.

Enzo Le Fee put Sunderland ahead from the penalty spot in the 36th minute, after Levi Colwill fouled Brian Brobbey. After the match Alonso said his side had not created enough chances in the final third against the low block and had not controlled and sustained the attack there.

Liverpool, meanwhile, got back on track with a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace. They had arrived in south London after defeats to Arsenal and Fenerbahce. Alexis Mac Allister headed Liverpool in front from Dominik Szoboszlai's cross after 40 minutes.

Florian Wirtz scored Liverpool's second with a composed finish from Bradley Barcola's cross in the 54th minute. Alexander Isak finished off Wirtz's pass in the 89th minute to wrap up the win. Eddie Nketiah's stoppage-time penalty, after a foul by Milos Kerkez, was no consolation for Palace.

After the match, Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola said it was an important win for the team going into the international break after the week they had. The win ended Liverpool's two-game losing streak, and the fourth-placed side are back on track.
