Dhaka's air still 'unhealthy' today, Lahore tops the pollution list

Staff Reporter

Dhaka ranked fifth among the world's most polluted cities today, with an air quality index score of 179, which is categorised as 'unhealthy'.

Lahore in Pakistan topped the list with a score of 291. Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal was second with 203, and the Indian capital Delhi was third with 197.

Kinshasa in DR Congo was fourth with 189, while Birmingham in the United Kingdom was sixth with 178.

The figures were seen on Sunday (8 November) at 7:40am on IQAir, the Switzerland-based air quality website.

IQAir provides a live, real-time index of how clean or polluted a city's air is.

Under its standards, a score of 0 to 50 is considered good, while 51 to 100 is considered moderate.

A score of 101 to 150 is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, and 151 to 200 is considered 'unhealthy'.

A score of 201 to 300 is considered 'very unhealthy', and anything above 301 is considered 'hazardous'.

Dhaka's score of 179 falls in the 'unhealthy' range, while Lahore's 291 is in the 'very unhealthy' range. Kolkata and Delhi are also in the 'very unhealthy' range, and Kinshasa, like Dhaka, is in the 'unhealthy' range.

Sunday morning's reading once again placed Dhaka near the top of the list of the world's most polluted cities.
