US President Donald Trump has said he has offered the job of White House press secretary to his friend and UFC boss Dana White. White said on Saturday that he plans to meet Trump at the White House on Monday to discuss the matter.

While at his golf club in Florida, Trump posted on social media that he had offered White the role of his chief spokesperson, describing him in the post as "the Great Dana White, a violent Fighter and Warrior".

White was in London on Saturday for a boxing event. Asked at a news conference about Trump’s post, he said he planned to fly to Washington right after and meet Trump on Monday.

When asked how he would balance the job with the positions he already holds in the fighting world, White first looked confused by the question, then said, "Yeah, I got a lot of jobs already."

He declined to say what conversations he had held with Trump, but said, "I’m sure I’ll have more to talk about after that."

Before the news conference, the UFC head shared an image of Trump’s post on Instagram, along with an image of himself standing behind the podium in the White House press briefing room, with the words "On to the next chapter."

The White House and a spokesperson for the UFC did not respond on Saturday to messages asking about the Truth Social post.

In his post, Trump said he had asked White to bring along several UFC fighters as "assistants", adding, "We need these people to defend us against the Lunatic Left. Dana will be a Press Secretary like none other. Dana, please take the job!"

White, however, did not make it clear whether he was seriously considering the position of becoming the US president’s primary spokesperson.

Elsewhere in his news conference, he described his ambitions to expand the Zuffa Boxing organisation he runs jointly with Saudi backers and to hold more of its events around the world.

Trump’s post came at a time when his White House is going through a major transition and struggling with his party’s deep losses in Tuesday’s midterm elections. The historic wins by Democratic candidates, including in areas Republicans had held for decades, led to the Republican Party losing control of both chambers of Congress.

On Friday, Trump announced he was replacing his longtime adviser Susie Wiles with aide Stephen Miller as the next chief of staff. Miller is known as the architect of the administration’s hard-line immigration policies and is among the most determined members of Trump’s inner circle.

The shake-up at the heart of the administration followed a brief but tumultuous week in which Trump tried out a new press secretary.
