Election Commission (EC) Secretary Akhtar Ahmed has said elections will be held in 1,050 union parishads (UPs) in the first phase.

Speaking to journalists at the Election Bhaban on Sunday (November 8), he said the Election Commission is considering collecting national identity card (NID) information from the primary level.

The EC secretary said consideration is being given to registering information on the NID from the age of six. Discussions are under way on building a database using the information given at the time of admission to primary education, he said.

On the UP elections, the EC secretary said preparations are being made to hold elections in 1,050 union parishads in the first phase. Union parishads whose terms have expired are being given priority.

He said electronic voting machines (EVMs) will not be used. Final stock-taking has begun to dispose of them, and the method of disposal will be announced after recommendations are received, he said.
