Sabine Lauber Takes Charge of UN Human Rights Mission in Bangladesh

Sabine Magdalena Lauber, the new head of the Bangladesh mission of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), has presented her credentials to State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir after taking charge.
She presented her credentials to the state minister at the foreign ministry on Sunday (November 8).
Welcoming Sabine Lauber and congratulating her on assuming office, the state minister reiterated the Bangladesh government's commitment to working constructively with the OHCHR.
Humayun Kabir said strengthening democracy, establishing good governance and the rule of law, and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms — including freedom of expression and of the media — are the government's priorities. He also stressed building strong institutions through legal and institutional reforms.
The meeting also discussed Bangladesh's ongoing engagement with the mandate holders of the UN special procedures. They also exchanged views on the human rights situation in Myanmar and the possible visit to Bangladesh of the UN special rapporteurs on the right to education.
The state minister said it must be ensured that the programmes and activities of the OHCHR in Bangladesh remain consistent with the government's priorities. He assured Sabine Lauber of the government's full cooperation in carrying out her responsibilities in Bangladesh.
In reply, Sabine Lauber praised the Bangladesh government's constructive engagement. She expressed interest in cooperating with Bangladesh's initiatives on the protection and promotion of human rights and on strengthening the relevant institutions. She also emphasised continuing regular dialogue and cooperation with the government, alongside outlining her priorities and planned activities during her tenure.
It may be noted that the OHCHR mission in Bangladesh was established under a three-year memorandum of understanding signed in July 2025 between the Government of Bangladesh and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. Sabine Magdalena Lauber has taken charge as the first head of this mission.
