The International Crimes Tribunal has given time until January 10 to submit the investigation report in the crimes against humanity case filed over the killing of 17 people in the capital's Jatrabari area during the July movement.

The order was given on Sunday (November 8) by International Crimes Tribunal-2.

The four arrested accused in this case are former Awami League member of parliament for Dhaka-5 Kazi Monirul Islam Monu, former officer-in-charge of Jatrabari police station Abul Hasan, former general secretary of Jatrabari Thana Awami League Harunur Rashid Munna, and former councillor of ward 63 of Dhaka South City Corporation Shafiqul Islam Khan.

According to the complaint in the case, eight people were killed in the Jatrabari area on July 18, 2024, and nine more on July 20.

Jatrabari was one of the most volatile areas of the capital during the July movement. The complaint says a total of 17 people lost their lives in the incidents over the two days. A crimes against humanity case was filed over these killings.

The arrested accused in the case include a former member of parliament, the former officer-in-charge of the police station, the former general secretary of the Thana Awami League and a former ward councillor. They have been accused of involvement in the killings.

The tribunal's new deadline for submitting the investigation report is January 10. The investigation agency must submit its report within that time.

Several cases over killings during the July movement are being tried at the International Crimes Tribunal. This Jatrabari case is one of the most significant among them.

Once the investigation report is submitted, the case will move to the next stage. The formal trial process, including framing of charges, is then expected to begin.

The victims' families have been waiting for justice in this case for a long time. Setting the deadline for the investigation report marks another step forward in taking the case ahead.
