Sullivan brothers make history as Cavan's brace powers Philadelphia past Toronto 4-1

Staff Reporter

Philadelphia Union beat Toronto FC 4-1 in Major League Soccer, powered by the outstanding performances of 17-year-old Cavan Sullivan, who is of Bangladeshi descent, and his elder brother Quinn Sullivan. In the match, Cavan scored twice, while elder brother Quinn scored one goal and set up two more for his teammates.

Two brothers scoring for the same club in the same match has happened only three times in MLS history. Before the Sullivans, the rare family feat had been achieved by Gonzalo and Federico Higuain, and by Diego and Yimmy Chara. The Sullivan brothers' achievement therefore earns a special place in the league's history.

Philadelphia played effective football from the start, and Cavan Sullivan gave them the lead in the 28th minute. The move began with his elder brother Quinn; Quinn's cross was controlled by Indiana Vassilev, who forced opposing goalkeeper William Yarbrough to come off his line, before the ball was laid off to the unmarked Cavan, who finished with ease.

Quinn Sullivan then made it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 41st minute. But just before the break, in first-half added time, Toronto forward Josh Sargent headed in from a Jorge Mihailovic corner to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

In the 58th minute of the second half, the Sullivan brothers' understanding came to the fore once again. Quinn started a swift counter-attack after receiving the ball from teammate Bruno Damiani's header, then played a precise pass to younger brother Cavan, who had burst into the box from behind. Cavan controlled the pass and slotted the ball through the legs of the advancing goalkeeper to complete his brace.

Later, in the 73rd minute, Damiani scored from the penalty spot to seal a commanding 4-1 win for Philadelphia. The match was decided by the brothers' combined performance — two goals from Cavan, and one goal plus two assists from Quinn.

The win secured Philadelphia Union a direct place in the three-match series of the MLS Cup playoffs. The team finished the regular season in sixth place in the Eastern Conference table with 50 points from 14 wins, 12 losses and 8 draws.

It is the tenth time in the club's history, and the eighth time in the last nine seasons, that they have reached the playoffs. Such a commanding win at the end of the regular season will boost the team's confidence heading into the playoffs.

Meanwhile, Cavan Sullivan has retained his place in the United States squad announced for the upcoming November international window. His consistent and memorable performances in the club shirt before joining the national team will only add to his confidence.

At just 17, Cavan Sullivan's performance in writing his name into MLS history is also an inspiration for young footballers of Bangladeshi descent. The night the two brothers scored in the same match to make history will remain unforgettable for the Sullivan family.
