Michael Douglas is stirring up nearly four decades of Hollywood history after questioning how Cher won the 1988 Academy Award for best actress over his "Fatal Attraction" co-star Glenn Close.

During a recent appearance on "The Graham Norton Show," Douglas, 82, appeared alongside Close, 79, as the two revisited their 1987 psychological thriller and the Oscar nominations that followed.

As the conversation turned to Close's upcoming honorary Academy Award, which she is set to receive at the Governors Awards on Nov. 15, Douglas quickly weighed in on the actress's decades-old loss.

Douglas said Close should have won for "Fatal Attraction." Cher ultimately took home the best actress trophy that same year for her role in the romantic comedy "Moonstruck."

Douglas said that Close had been nominated for her fourth Oscar at the time. When Douglas pointed out Cher's victory, Norton said, "Oh wow."

Douglas responded: "I know. That's what we all said."

Douglas continued praising Close's work in "Fatal Attraction," calling it one of the greatest performances in movie history.

Despite the renewed attention surrounding her Oscar victory, Cher seemingly brushed off Douglas' comments. "Cher adores Michael Douglas," a representative for the singer told Fox News Digital.

The response offered a surprisingly warm conclusion to a controversy that has followed two of Hollywood's biggest stars for nearly 40 years.

At the 60th Academy Awards, Cher won best actress for her portrayal of Loretta Castorini in "Moonstruck," opposite Nicolas Cage. Close was nominated for her portrayal of Alex Forrest in "Fatal Attraction," which starred Douglas as a married attorney whose extramarital affair spirals into dangerous consequences.

The thriller received six Academy Award nominations, including best picture.

Representatives for Douglas did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
