Eight BGB Platoons Deployed to Guard 57 Puja Mandaps in Sylhet
Eight platoons of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have been deployed to provide security at 57 puja mandaps in Sylhet during the Durga Puja festival. BGB members will serve alongside the police to ensure the festival passes off peacefully.
Durga Puja is the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community, and the mandaps draw large crowds of devotees and visitors every year. Extra security measures have been taken this year to manage those crowds and prevent any untoward incident.
The deployed BGB platoons will patrol and keep watch over important and sensitive mandaps, and preparations are in place to take immediate action if needed.
Tight security arrangements have been made across the country for the festival this year. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman himself is touring different districts, visiting puja mandaps and assuring people of all faiths of their safety.
Festivities are also under way in other districts of Sylhet Division in a celebratory atmosphere. The administration has stepped up surveillance at mandaps so devotees can perform their rituals without disruption.
Law enforcement officials say the security arrangements will remain in force until the festival ends, with coordinated security plans followed at every stage through to the immersion of the idols.
Leaders of the Puja Udjapan Parishad have expressed satisfaction with the security measures and hope that, with the administration's vigilance, this year's Durga festival will be completed entirely peacefully.
