Gono Odhikar Parishad's Shariatpur district secretary Khabir Hossain resigns, levelling corruption allegations against Nur

Advocate Khabir Hossain, general secretary of the Shariatpur district unit of Gono Odhikar Parishad, has announced his resignation from the party, levelling allegations of corruption and unethical activities against party president and State Minister for Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Haque Nur and several other top-level leaders and activists.

He announced at a press conference held in the Shariatpur district court area on Sunday afternoon (25 October) that he was stepping down as general secretary of the district unit.

At the press conference, Khabir Hossain alleged that, saying Gono Odhikar Parishad would contest the 2026 national election on its own, the party collected about Tk 90 lakh from nomination seekers for nomination forms and about Tk 3 crore at the time of final nominations for the party office. Instead, he said, the party later reached an understanding with the BNP and contested only one seat rather than fielding its own candidates.

Khabir Hossain said: 'Nurul Haque Nur contested the election with money taken from us. After that, thousands of leaders and activists like me resigned from the party. I too saw that Nurul Haque Nur is a corrupt person.'

He alleged that he was embarrassed and angered by various unethical activities of some top-level leaders and activists of the party, and that he decided to step down from his party post so as not to remain associated with those activities.

Khabir Hossain said: 'I do not want to compromise with any activity that conflicts with the party's founding ideals and principles. In the current situation it is not possible for me to continue working with the party. That is why I have announced my resignation from the post of general secretary of the Shariatpur district unit of Gono Odhikar Parishad.'
