A total of Tk 827,450 has been found in the donation boxes of the shrine of Fakir Lalon Sai at his akhrabari in Cheuria, in Kushtia's Kumarkhali Upazila. The two donation boxes of the shrine, famed for its Baramkhana, were opened again on Monday morning (26 October), only 15 days after the previous opening.
The seals were broken and the two boxes opened in the presence of Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Md Zakir Hossain, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Raisul Islam, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Navid Sarwar and journalists.
The money was then counted for about three hours on the fourth floor of the Lalon Academy building. At the end of the counting, the two boxes together held Tk 827,450.
Earlier, on 10 October, the donation boxes were opened and the money counted in public for the first time. About Tk 649,348 was found that day, and it was deposited the next day, 11 October, into the Lalon Academy's bank account.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Raisul Islam said: 'The donation boxes are opened four times a year around the two festivals of Fakir Lalon Sai. In continuation of that, seven days after the 136th death anniversary, the boxes were opened and Tk 827,450 was found.'
