Two toddler cousins drown in a pond in Gobindaganj, Gaibandha
Two young children have drowned in a pond at Chowdhurypara in Samaspara village, under Talukkanupur union of Gobindaganj upazila in Gaibandha. The accident happened on Monday morning (26 October).
The two children were Abdullah Araf and Miftahul Jannat, both aged one year and ten months. Miftahul Jannat was the daughter of Ashraful Islam of the village, and Abdullah Araf was the son of Zillur Rahman of the same village. They were cousins.
Locals said the two children were playing together in the house courtyard on Monday morning while their mothers were busy cooking. At one point, unnoticed by anyone, they fell into the pond beside the house.
Family members later began searching in different places when the children could not be found. At one stage, relatives and locals saw their lifeless bodies floating in the pond water.
Relatives and locals rescued the two children and took them to the Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared them dead.
Gobindaganj police station officer-in-charge Mahfuz Alam said police visited the scene after receiving the news. As there was no complaint, the two bodies were handed over to the families.
