The Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation has rescued a python trapped in a net and a venomous banded krait from a dwelling house in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar. The two snakes were rescued from separate locations on Monday evening and night, 26 October, and were later handed over to the Sreemangal Forest Department's range office.

At around 7pm on Monday, journalist Syed Sirajul Islam Hasan spotted a python trapped in a net beside a road in the Purba Nowagaon area of Sreemangal and informed the Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation.

On receiving the news, the foundation's director Swapan Dev Sajal and environmental workers Rajdeep Dev Deep and Ridon Gour reached the spot. After about 20 minutes of effort, they cut the net and rescued the python unharmed.

At around 8pm the same day, the residents of Khalilur Rahman's home in the Ramnagar Manipuri Para area of Sreemangal were frightened to find a snake inside the house. The snake was a banded krait, which is rare and endangered in Bangladesh. Khalilur Rahman informed the foundation, whose members went to the spot and identified the snake.

Members of the Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation rescued both snakes unharmed and handed them over to the Sreemangal Forest Department's range office.

Kazi Nazmul Islam, range officer of the Sreemangal Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division, said the banded krait's scientific name is Bungarus fasciatus and it is a highly venomous species. Being shy by nature, it is hardly ever seen in localities, he said, adding that the two rescued snakes will be released into the forest.
