Shahjalal Rumi, the father of the child at the centre of the allegation of sexual abuse of a seven-year-old at a Tongi madrasa, is in the country. He has filed for anticipatory bail in the High Court in the case filed against him over allegations of beating, attempted murder and theft.

Rumi's lawyer, H. M. Ruhul Amin Molla (Hasan), confirmed the information on Tuesday, 27 October.

The lawyer said Shahjalal Rumi stayed at his chamber for a long time from Monday afternoon to take legal assistance. An application has been filed in the High Court seeking anticipatory bail in the case filed at Tongi West police station against him. However, the date of the hearing of the application is not yet known.

Rumi's lawyer also said his client is respectful towards the law. Keeping faith in the judiciary, he wants to ensure his own and his family's safety and fair justice through the legal process.

On 21 October, an allegation arose of sexual abuse of a seven-year-old student at Qariul Quran International Cadet Madrasa in the Auchpara area of Tongi. In that incident, the child's father, Shahjalal Rumi, beat the accused teacher, Md Moslem Uddin. The teacher was later handed over to the police.

When a video of the incident spread on social media, debate and criticism began across the country. Soon after, the child's father filed a case at Tongi West police station over the allegation of sexual abuse.

On the other hand, in a counter case filed on behalf of the madrasa principal, Rumi was accused of stealing 17 lakh taka, beating and attempted murder. Since that case was filed, he had not been seen in public.

Meanwhile, on Monday night Rumi told journalists that he was leaving the country. He said: 'I am no longer in this country. I am not thinking about these things any more, whatever happens, happens; you all stay well.'

However, according to the information given by his lawyer, despite saying he had left the country, Shahjalal Rumi is in Bangladesh and has applied for anticipatory bail in the High Court to obtain legal remedy in the case.
