Actress Popy Loses Her Mother Mariyam Begum; Second Janaza and Burial in Khulna

Dhaka film actress Sadika Parvin Popy, once a popular leading lady, has lost her mother. Her mother Mariyam Begum died at 1:30am late on Tuesday night (27 October) while under treatment at a hospital in the capital.

Mariyam Begum had long suffered from kidney disease and various age-related problems. She suffered a sudden stroke at her home in Niketan, Gulshan.

At about 1:45am late on 14 October she was admitted to Insaf Barakah Kidney and General Hospital in Moghbazar.

On Tuesday night her physical condition deteriorated and preparations were under way to move her to the intensive care unit (ICU). In that state she died at the hospital at about 1:30am while under treatment.

Film director Badiul Alam Khokon told the media that Mariyam Begum's first janaza was held in Dhaka. Her body is then being taken to her village home in Khulna. She will be buried there after a second janaza.

Actor Omar Sani said in a social media post that Moushumi and Popy are first cousins, and through that connection Popy's mother was also his mother-in-law. He wrote that since 1997 he had always called her Amma, that she had left the world, and prayed that Allah grant her Jannat. He also wrote that he is continually losing elders, and that next it will be his turn to go.

Popy once acted regularly in Dhaka cinema. She has long remained out of the public eye and has almost no contact even with film-industry colleagues. She was not seen making any comment on her mother's death either. In these circumstances the news has created a mood of mourning in the film world.
