Worker's Body Allegedly Held for Nine Hours at Madaripur Sadar Hospital, Relatives Protest Demanding the RMO's Trial

Staff Reporter

Relatives protested on the premises of the 250-bed Madaripur Sadar Hospital over allegations that a worker's body was held there for nine hours. On Tuesday night, October 27, they demonstrated demanding the trial of Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Akhil Sarkar.

The dead worker was named as Md Saim, son of Shamsu Molla of the Amirabad area of Madaripur town.

According to police, the relatives, eyewitnesses and hospital sources, Saim was seriously injured by an electric shock from a power pole close to the building while doing Thai glass work on the second floor of Saiful Islam's under-construction building in Amirabad. Local people rescued him and took him to Sadar Hospital, where the duty doctor declared him dead. The body was then kept in the morgue.

The relatives said they had obtained permission from the deputy commissioner to take the body without an autopsy and came to the hospital to collect it. They alleged that the emergency department would not issue the body identification paper, and trouble arose over that.

Gathering in front of the hospital, the relatives protested demanding the resignation, trial and arrest of RMO Dr Akhil Sarkar.

Later, Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Zakia Sultana and Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad came to the hospital and spoke with the relatives. The body was then handed over to them.

Madaripur Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Zakia Sultana said she had come after hearing that the body was being held at the hospital, and that she had spoken with the deputy commissioner and the hospital authorities. She said an investigation committee would be formed over the incident and legal action taken very quickly.
