A Chhatra Dal leader named Saimun Islam Hriday (27) has allegedly been beaten in Savar, Dhaka, and the accusation has been raised against the son of Dr Enamur Rahman, who was state minister for disaster management and relief during the Awami League government. The victim has filed a written complaint at Savar Model Police Station over the incident.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Alam of Savar Model Police Station confirmed the complaint on Wednesday (28 October) night.

The complaint states that the beating took place late on Tuesday night (27 October) in front of Bismillah Tower, west of Enam Medical College Hospital, in the Thana Road neighbourhood of the Savar municipal area.

The victim, Saimun Islam Hriday, is general secretary of the Enam Medical College Hospital unit of Chhatra Dal. The accused is Saif MD Enam (27), son of former disaster management and relief state minister Dr Enamur Rahman.

According to the complaint, Hriday and Saif were both former students and batchmates at Enam Medical College in Savar, and a hostile relationship had developed between them since their college days.

The complaint says that, arising from that hostility, Saif blocked Hriday's path late on Tuesday night on the road in front of Bismillah Tower, west of Enam Medical College, when he found him alone. Hriday was allegedly abused in foul language over his involvement with the BNP, and when he protested, Saif became enraged and beat him indiscriminately, physically humiliating him.

Saimun Islam Hriday said: 'Last night I had gone out onto the street. Suddenly Saif blocked my way with a motorcycle. He was my classmate. He started threatening me.' He said that because Saif's father was then an MP and a director of the institution, several groups of Saif's sycophants had formed at the college; they used to avoid those groups, which left Saif displeased with them, and the attack may have happened for those reasons.

Hriday also said Saif threatened him, saying words to the effect of 'You do BNP politics — call whichever father you have,' and slapped him as he said it. He said he had filed a complaint at Savar Model Police Station and that the OC had said the matter would be looked into seriously and action taken.

Attempts were made several times to reach the accused's mother, Rowshan Akhtar Chowdhury, by mobile phone, but she did not receive the calls, so her comment could not be obtained.

Savar Model Police Station OC Saiful Alam said a written complaint had been received alleging punching and abusive language. The complaint has been recorded as a general diary (GD), and legal action will be taken after investigation.
