The government has ordered those who, after receiving an allocation of a government home, sublet the whole flat or part of it, to remove the tenants by 31 October and live in the allocated home themselves.

The Directorate of Government Accommodation announced this in an urgent public notice on Thursday. The notice said that if the instruction is not followed, the allocation of the government home will be cancelled and legal action taken against those concerned.

The notice said an inspection team of the directorate found in its report that some allottees had sublet or rented out one room, two rooms, or the entire flat or home allocated in their favour to others.

The directorate said such activity is contrary to the Bangladesh Allocation Rules, 1982. The notice was issued for the information of all allottees of government homes or flats under the Directorate of Government Accommodation and all concerned.

The notice said: 'Allottees of any home or flat under the Directorate of Government Accommodation are requested not to sublet or rent out, in any way, the whole or part (including one or more rooms) of the home or flat allocated in their name. Those who have already sublet or rented out are directed to compulsorily remove the sublet tenant by 31 October and live or stay in the allocated home as per rules.'

The notice said that if subletting or renting is found in any home after the government-set deadline, the allottee's allocation will be cancelled under the Bangladesh Allocation Rules, 1982, without showing any cause, along with necessary punitive and legal action as per the rules.

At the same time, under rule 14(3) of those rules, the allottee's head of office and appointing authority will be informed of the matter and requested to take disciplinary action against them.
