Allotment to be cancelled for renting out government homes: tenants must leave by 31 October
The Directorate of Government Accommodation has issued a strict instruction to stop government houses and flats from being rented out, in whole or in part, to others. Those who have sublet their homes have been ordered to remove the tenants and live in their allotted homes themselves by 31 October.
The information was given in an urgent public notice from the Directorate of Government Accommodation on Thursday (29 October). The notice says action will be taken against government employees whose allotments are found in breach of the instruction.
According to the notice, a recent report by the directorate's inspection team found that some allottees had sublet or rented out one or two rooms, or the entire house or flat allotted in their name, to others. Such activity is contrary to the Bangladesh Allocation Rules, 1982.
In this situation, allottees of any house or flat under the directorate have been requested not to sublet or rent out their allotted home, in whole or in part — including one or more rooms — in any way. Those who have already rented theirs out have been instructed to compulsorily remove the sub-tenants by 31 October and reside in the allotted home as required.
The notice further says that if a sub-tenant or tenant is found in any government house or flat after the deadline, the allottee concerned will not be given any further opportunity to show cause. The allotment will be cancelled directly under the Bangladesh Allocation Rules, 1982, along with necessary punitive and legal measures.
Under rule 14(3) of the same rules, the allottee's office head and appointing authority will also be informed of the matter. The Directorate of Government Accommodation will request the authority concerned to take disciplinary action against the employee as well.
