BNP candidate Mirza Faysal Amin is on course for a landslide victory in the Thakurgaon-1 (Sadar, Ruhia and Bhulli) by-election. Results have been received from 154 of the constituency's 185 polling centres, and in those centres the sheaf-of-paddy candidate Mirza Faysal has received 187,527 votes.

His nearest rival, Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Delwar Hossain, contesting with the scales symbol, has received 80,031 votes. In the count from 154 centres, Mirza Faysal's vote total is therefore more than double that of the Jamaat candidate.

Thakurgaon district election officer and returning officer Md Kamrul Islam announced the results at around 8:30 pm on Thursday (October 29).

Voting had begun earlier on Thursday at 8 am and continued without a break until 4 pm. Results then began arriving from the centres one by one.

According to election office sources, voting in Thakurgaon-1 was held at a total of 185 polling centres across Sadar, Ruhia and Bhulli. Of them, 113 centres were in Thakurgaon Sadar upazila, 33 in the newly formed Ruhia upazila and 39 in Bhulli upazila.

According to the district election office, Thakurgaon-1 has a total of 516,138 voters. About 62 percent of the votes were cast on Thursday.

The candidates in the by-election are Mirza Faysal Amin (sheaf of paddy), the younger brother of President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir; Jamaat-e-Islami's Delwar Hossain (scales); Bangladesh Khelafat Andolan's Md Abdul Alim Nizami (banyan tree); Islami Andolan Bangladesh's Hafez Md Khademul Islam (hand fan); and Bangladesh Congress's Husain Muhammad Omar Faruk (green coconut).

After the announcement of results from 154 centres, results from the remaining 31 centres are still to come. On the announced count, Mirza Faysal's lead is so large that the report described him as being on course for a huge victory.
