The technical evaluation committee of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has recommended raising the price of a private 12kg LPG cylinder from Tk1,837 to Tk1,976.

Those concerned say the commission may announce the new price next week.

The recommendation was made on Thursday (29 October) at a public hearing on LPG price and commission revision at the BIAM Foundation in the capital.

Under the technical committee's recommendation, various charges at operator, distributor and retailer levels will be increased. Operator charge has been proposed to rise from Tk16.74 to Tk23.48 per kg.

Distributor charge has been proposed from Tk4.17 to Tk6.67 per kg, and retailer charge from Tk3.75 to Tk5.83 per kg.

In addition, the price of LPG at retailer level has been recommended to be set at Tk164.68 per kg, up from Tk153.6. On the basis of these calculations, a Tk139 increase for a 12kg cylinder has been proposed.

Under the BERC technical evaluation committee's recommendation, import parity price has been proposed at Tk128.70 per kg.

At the hearing, Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) adviser Khalilur Rahman said consumers' convenience and hardship should also be taken into consideration when fixing LPG prices.
