The body of Awami League leader Yunus Al Murshed, 48, has been recovered from the Louhajang River beside his home in Mirzapur, Tangail. Mirzapur police officer-in-charge Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the body was recovered at around 7:30pm on Friday.

Yunus Al Murshed was president of Ward No. 9 of Mirzapur municipality Awami League, whose activities are banned. He was the son of Amir Hossain of Kathalia village, and leaves behind his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Murshed regularly fished with a traditional net in the Louhajang River beside his home. On Friday afternoon, as on other days, he went to the river ghat to fish.

When he did not return home after evening fell, family members went to the ghat to look for him. There they found his body floating in the river.

Local resident Shaminur Mia said fishing with that kind of net does not require entering the water, and that many people had seen Murshed fishing shortly before evening. After the recovery, both of his eyes and one ear were found to be badly damaged.

Former municipal councillor Afzalur Rahman Chhanu said Murshed was a skilled swimmer, and that it was incomprehensible how he could have drowned in chest-deep water.

Officer-in-charge Abdullah Al Mamun said, 'We have not received any complaint in this matter. If we do, legal action will be taken.'
