The pass rate in this year's HSC examinations under the Barishal Education Board is 44.84 percent — the lowest of any board in the country. Only 950 students in the board achieved GPA-5. Both the pass rate and the number of GPA-5 achievers have fallen compared with last year.

Professor Sharif Morshed Reza, controller of examinations of the Barishal Education Board, formally announced the results at 11 am on Saturday (31 October). Announcing the results, he said this year's results had been published after proper review and evaluation, and that they reflected the students' true merit.

According to board data, a total of 57,912 students from 350 colleges across the six districts of the division sat the examinations under the Barishal board this year. Among them were 26,755 boys and 31,157 girls. A total of 25,970 students passed.

Another striking figure in the results is that not a single student from 11 institutions under the board managed to pass this year — every candidate from those 11 institutions failed.

Last year, the Barishal board's pass rate was 62.57 percent, and 1,674 students achieved GPA-5. On that comparison, the pass rate has dropped by nearly 18 percentage points in one year, and the number of GPA-5 achievers has fallen by 724.

Barishal also sits at the bottom in the national picture. Across all 11 education boards, the average pass rate in this year's HSC and equivalent examinations is 52.12 percent, with 40,084 students achieving GPA-5 in total. Among the nine general boards, Dhaka board has the highest pass rate at 61.80 percent; just above Barishal is Jessore board, with a pass rate of 44.92 percent.
