Cumilla board passes 48.04 percent: English and higher maths blamed for the poor results, says exam controller

The pass rate in the 2026 HSC examinations under the Cumilla Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education is 48.04 percent, down from 48.86 percent last year. A total of 1,313 students under the board achieved GPA-5 this year. With the pass rate below half, more than half of the students who sat the examination failed to pass.
Professor Dr Md Shafiqul Islam, controller of examinations of the Cumilla board, formally announced the results at a press conference on Saturday morning (31 October).
According to the board's published results, a total of 92,162 students sat this year's HSC examination — 36,728 boys and 55,434 girls. A total of 44,272 students passed, among them 15,857 boys and 28,415 girls.
Analysis of the results shows a pass rate of 43.17 percent for boys and 51.26 percent for girls — girls are ahead of boys both in pass rate and in the number of successful candidates. By stream, science students performed the best.
Explaining the poor results, exam controller Professor Dr Md Shafiqul Islam said the results in English and higher mathematics had collapsed this year. Students did badly because their basic concepts in these subjects had not been made clear from the lower classes, he said, adding that students and teachers need to be more careful about this.
Also present at the press conference were the board's secretary Professor Mohammad Jahangir Alam, college inspector Professor Mohammad Shipon Mia, school inspector Professor Abu Saleh Md Tarik Mahmud, and deputy controllers Mosa. Papia Akter and Md Mahmudul Islam.
