Garment Workers Block Mirpur Roads Again Demanding Tk 30,000 Minimum Wage
Garment workers have blocked roads in the capital's Mirpur again, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk 30,000. The workers have kept several points in Mirpur blocked since 10:45am on Saturday (October 31), causing severe traffic congestion in the surrounding areas.
Pallabi Police Station officer-in-charge Md Jalal Uddin said, 'Several hundred workers from nearby factories came down onto the streets and began protesting, and traffic movement stopped. Police are trying to persuade the protesters to leave the roads.'
The officer-in-charge said the workers have so far been protesting peacefully, and that there has been no clash or untoward incident with the police.
The Mirpur traffic division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said in a post on its Facebook page that traffic movement is being disrupted in the Mirpur-10, Mirpur-11, Mirpur-12 and Prashika Mor areas because of the garment workers' protest.
This is not the first blockade over the same demand in Mirpur. Garment workers also blocked roads at several points in Mirpur last Thursday. A few days ago, roads in Uttara were blocked for several consecutive days over the same demand.
