Court Grants Four-Day Remand for Dip in Murder Case of Former Air Force Officer Tahsif

Staff Reporter

A court has granted four days of remand to interrogate Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dip, arrested as a suspect in the murder case over the death of former Air Force flight lieutenant Tahsif Souri.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piyas passed the order on Saturday (31 October) afternoon after a hearing. Dip had been produced before the court at around 2:15pm that day.

For proper investigation of the case, Inspector Firoz Uddin of the Tongi outpost of the river police had sought seven days of remand for Dip. Additional Public Prosecutor Azizul Haque Didar argued in favour of remand for the prosecution at the hearing. The court granted four days.

The remand application said the victim, K M Tahsif Souri, was a former Air Force officer who lived in a flat in Sector 18 under Turag police station. On 27 October at around 6pm, the accused Dip called him out of the flat. He had been missing since then.

The next day, 28 October, at 4:30pm, police learned through the national emergency service 999 that an unidentified body was floating in the Turag River near Rajabari Ghat under Uttarkhan police station. After recovering the body and preparing an inquest report, police identified him from an iPhone found in his trouser pocket.

Based on information technology and secret information, investigators learned that on the day of the incident the accused Dip had taken the victim to the Mazar Basti area under Tongi West police station. In preliminary questioning, Dip admitted that the victim was his senior.

The application further said primary investigation had found clear evidence of Dip's direct involvement in the killing. It said remand questioning was essential so that the accused could not obstruct the investigation if released on bail.

The purposes listed for remand questioning were uncovering the main mystery and motive behind the killing, identifying and arresting other unknown accused, recovering evidence used in the murder, recovering the victim's personal motorcycle, and pinpointing the exact place where the killing took place.

The victim's father, K M Enayetul Karim, filed the case at Uttarkhan police station in the capital at 1:05am on Friday against unidentified persons over Tahsif's death. Police later showed Dip arrested in that case as a suspect.
