New facts in Tahsif murder probe: 90 minutes at an Uttara bar on his last night, CCTV sets out the timeline

Staff Reporter

New information has emerged in the investigation into the death of former Bangladesh Air Force flight lieutenant K M Tahsif Sauri. Before going to the Mazar Basti area of Tongi, he spent about an hour and a half at a restaurant and bar in the capital's Uttara. With him were his junior friend Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dip and a young woman whom people linked to the investigation described as Tahsif's girlfriend.

Analysis of CCTV footage showed that on the night of 27 October, at 10:17pm, Tahsif and the young woman went to the Nest Restaurant and Bar in Uttara's Sector 11. They arrived there on one motorcycle. A little later, Dip arrived on another motorcycle.

After parking the motorcycles, Tahsif and the young woman entered the restaurant first. Later CCTV footage showed them waiting in front of the lift, without Dip at that moment. When Dip arrived a little later wearing a helmet, the three of them took the bar's lift together.

According to sources linked to the investigation, they stayed there for about an hour and a half. The three then left together by motorcycle. Tahsif's girlfriend was dropped off at her home, and from there Tahsif and Dip went to the Mazar Basti area of Tongi.

To unravel the mystery of Tahsif's death, investigators are collecting information on every moment of that night. They are examining who he was with, where he went, how long he stayed and who was with him last. The authorities have not officially said whether what was said or happened during the stay at the Uttara restaurant and bar is part of the investigation.

Meanwhile, a court has ordered four days' remand for Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dip, arrested in the murder case filed over Tahsif's death. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Pias passed the order on Saturday. Dip had been produced before the court at around 2:15pm, and Inspector Firoz Uddin of the Tongi naval police outpost had sought seven days' remand to question him for the sake of a proper investigation.

The remand application said the late K M Tahsif Sauri was a former officer of the Bangladesh Air Force. He lived in a flat in Sector 18 under Turag Police Station in the capital. On 27 October, at around 6pm, the accused Dip called him out of his home. Tahsif was missing from then on.

The next day, 28 October, at around 4:30pm, police learned through the national emergency service 999 that an unidentified body was floating in the Turag River near Rajabari Ghat in Uttarkhan. Police went to the spot and recovered the body.

While preparing the inquest, police identified him through the iPhone found in his trouser pocket. Later, based on information technology and secret information, investigators learned that on the day of the incident Dip had taken Tahsif to the Mazar Basti area under Tongi West Police Station.

The remand application also said that in preliminary questioning Dip admitted that Tahsif was his senior and elder brother figure. But investigators are still seeking answers to what happened behind Tahsif's death, what took place after they reached the Mazar Basti area and how he died. Police hope to obtain important information on these questions during the four-day remand.
