A son has been accused of stabbing his sleeping mother to death in Dhaka's Dhanmondi after becoming angry that there was no fried egg with his breakfast. The dead woman was named as Afia Akter, 68. Police have detained the accused son, Tahsin Arif Arnab, 30.

The killing took place on Saturday (31 October) morning at the family's own flat on Road 9/A in Dhanmondi. Police said Arnab woke up in the morning and wanted breakfast. Finding no fried egg, he stabbed his sleeping mother repeatedly in anger.

Hearing the mother's screams, neighbours informed the police. Police then went to the flat, detained Arnab, recovered Afia Akter's body from the scene and took it to the police station.

Police said Arnab is mentally ill and addicted to drugs. After receiving treatment at a rehabilitation centre for a long time, he returned home about a month ago.

Muhammad Imdadul Islam, officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station, said that after preparing the inquest report, the body was sent to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The son has been detained on charges of killing his mother and the process of filing a case is under way.

The OC also said the body bore multiple serious sharp-weapon wounds on the face and neck. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

He said the victim's daughters live abroad. They have been informed, and after they arrive, the burial of the body and the subsequent legal process will be completed.
