Manchester United lose 2-0 at Chelsea, now nine matches without a win

Chelsea took full advantage of Manchester United's fragile second-half defending to beat the visitors 2-0. It was United's third defeat in a row, and it increased the pressure on head coach Michael Carrick.
United are now without a win in nine matches in all competitions, their longest such run since October-November 1988. After a fourth Premier League defeat of the season, they have dropped to 16th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone.
United played promising football in the first half but could not sustain it after the break. Five minutes into the second half, Morgan Rogers advanced largely unchallenged through the middle of United's defence to give Chelsea the lead.
Fourteen minutes later Cole Palmer doubled the lead from the penalty spot. With the help of the video assistant referee (VAR), it was seen that Lisandro Martinez had struck Wesley Fofana in the face with his hand without looking at the ball. The United defender was shown a second yellow card and sent off.
Chelsea could have extended their lead. Estevao, starting a Premier League match for the first time this season after coach Xabi Alonso gave him his first league start in this game, put the ball in the net, but the goal was ruled out for a marginal offside.
United also put the ball in the net in the first half, but Cunha's close-range header was disallowed for offside after a VAR check. Bruno Fernandes, back in the starting eleven, sent a rebound over the crossbar, and Amad Diallo twice failed to score when one-on-one with Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders.
After Rogers' goal, Martinez's dismissal — two yellow cards within three minutes — and Palmer's penalty together handed Chelsea complete control of the match.
Chelsea had chances to widen the margin late on as well. An Estevao effort missed narrowly, and substitute Valentin Barco failed to take an easy chance.
In added time, United forward Bryan Mbeumo's powerful shot came back off the crossbar, but it did not change the result. The win lifted Chelsea to fourth in the table. Depending on the week's remaining results, Carrick's side could drop into the three relegation places.
