Afia Akter, 68, wife of the late Abul Kashem, a former Bangladeshi ambassador to the Philippines, has been stabbed to death at her home in the capital's Dhanmondi. Police have arrested her younger son, Tahsin Arif Ornob, 30, on allegations of murder.

The killing took place between 5:30 and 6:00 on Saturday morning at a flat on Road 9/A in Dhanmondi.

According to police, Tahsin entered his sleeping mother's room and stabbed her repeatedly. Afia Akter suffered serious wounds to her face and throat and died from excessive bleeding.

Police said the mother and son had slept in separate rooms on Friday night. On Saturday morning Tahsin went into the next room and stabbed his mother. Police obtained initial information about the incident by questioning the household worker and people nearby.

On receiving the news, police recovered the body from the home. It has been sent to the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College morgue for an autopsy.

The late Afia Akter had two sons. Her elder son died a few years ago. She lived in the flat with her younger son, Tahsin.

Dhanmondi Police Station officer-in-charge Imdadul Islam said Tahsin was detained from the home. A case has been filed over the killing of Afia Akter, and he has been shown arrested in that case.

The OC added that Tahsin had previously received treatment at a drug addiction rehabilitation centre. Relatives have said he has mental health problems. The real motive for the killing is not yet known, and the matter is being investigated.
