Political message and violence images appear on DMP news portal, site later inaccessible

Staff Reporter

Objectionable political messages and images of violence have appeared on the website of 'DMP News', the online news portal of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Visitors entering the site late on Saturday night (31 October) were shown a photograph of police and scenes of violence alongside an image carrying the words 'Police — no matter how much you beat us, can you forget 5 August?' Music could also be heard playing in the background of the website.

At that time, instead of the portal's normal news content, the political message and violence imagery were what the site displayed. That raised the question of whether the website had been 'hacked' or subjected to a cyber attack.

After the incident, the DMP News site could no longer be accessed at all. However, whether the website was in fact hacked has not been officially confirmed.

According to the description published on the DMP News website itself, it is the online news portal of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. It publishes news of DMP activities, crime-related reports, public-awareness information and other police news.

Several officials of the DMP's media wing were contacted by phone and message for comment on the matter, but none of them responded.
