Case may be filed against retired Major Hafiz over anti-state activities, DB chief says

The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has taken retired Major Khandakar Abdul Hafiz into custody over allegations of activities against state security and involvement in the BDR killings. On Sunday morning, DMP's DB chief Shafiqul Islam confirmed the development and said a case may be filed against Khandakar Abdul Hafiz over allegations of anti-state activities.
He was taken into DB custody from the capital's Banani area on Saturday night (31 October). Another report said the DB arrested him from Banani late on Saturday night.
According to the DB, alongside the allegation of involvement in activities against state security, he also faces an allegation of involvement in the BDR killings. However, media sources said it has not yet been confirmed under which case he was arrested.
DB chief Shafiqul Islam said a case may be filed against him over anti-state activities. It was he who confirmed the news of Hafiz being taken into custody to the media on Sunday morning.
Retired Major Khandakar Abdul Hafiz joined the Awami League before the ninth national parliamentary election in 2008. On 6 September that year, he formally joined the party by presenting flowers to the Awami League's then acting president, Zillur Rahman.
Several other former military officers also joined the Awami League at that time. Attention will now be on what case is filed against him following the DB custody and where the subsequent legal process leads.
